Why Choose OVS?

Why Choose the Old Vicarage School for your child?

OVS is different

What makes us different is the feeling you get and is notoriously difficult to put into words.

“The Old Vicarage School has the most amazing, warm, nurturing feeling, that we all felt the moment we walked in through the gates and were treated so warmly. We were impressed with how well your Head knew all the children. I think you have such a great environment for helping little ones flourish.”

A Family Run School

It is our aim that every child at OVS will feel loved supported and cherished throughout their education with us. As a family run school, we create a home from home environment for the children. The beautiful setting itself supports this. We want parents to feel that same level of confidence when they drop their children off each day into our care, that they feel when leaving their children with their family members, such as grandparents. Every adult working with the children, either in class, or at any time in school sees each child as an extension of their own family and treats them accordingly, in the same way, an excellent parent would want or expect. In essence, every child will feel loved and know that we want the best for them.

The best way to feel the difference is to come and visit us. Here are six reasons that we encourage you to choose OVS for your child:-

1. Appropriate challenge

Our curriculum, teaching and learning is graded as excellent in all areas by the ISI school inspectors continuously since 2007. We follow the national curriculum but also go beyond it. We have a sky’s the limit approach in our mixed ability school. We are most proud that the inspectors recognised that children of all abilities make excellent progress at OVS. This is due to the dedication of our excellent teaching staff, but also support from home and unwavering commitment from the children themselves to want to become the best versions of themselves.

2. Positive Relationships

We foster excellent relationships between children and adults within the school. This extends to our relationships with our parents. We are very much in a partnership with our parents, all wanting the best outcomes for the children in our care. Parents are welcome to discuss the children with us at school at any time. We never encourage parents to sit on a concern. We would much rather they come in to discuss any issues so that they can be resolved.

3. Personalised approach

Class sizes are carefully managed to ensure every child receives as much support and attention as possible on their learning journey. For example, from nursery and throughout key stage one, our teaching team listens to every child read at least three times per week, until they become independent readers who have completed the OVS chosen reading schemes.

4. Awe and wonder

A child’s primary years should be full of excitement and adventure. Our teachers don’t allow the national curriculum to stifle or restrict our children to discover knowledge and develop new skills. We often describe OVS as Narnia. We want to create the same level of excitement and adventure, so that each child will look back with great fondness upon their primary years.

5. Becoming the best version of themselves

In the classroom, in their personal relationships, on the sports field and in the performing arts, all children are encouraged to strive to become the best versions of themselves in all that they do. The adults around them enable this through continuous encouragement, love and support.

6. Young men and women for others

From the moment they begin OVS, our children are taught to understand that they must not only celebrate their talents and the talents of others, but also put those talents of good use to support their wider community. Personal gain is commendable, but never at the cost of societal gain. We have created a caring, loving community of young people who see the joy in showing love and kindness to others, putting their talents to good use.

“Our son chose it! We gave him three options…he chose two taster days and rated OVS 9.5/10 and insisted on joining.” Parent
“‘Old fashioned’ but in a good way. It reminded is of our little village primary schools and we wanted something similar for our child.” Parent
